But you'd start the process from the bottom of the lamp base, not from the top: In the bottom, there's a system that clamps the cord tight so if and when the cord gets pulled, that force acts upon the clamp instead of allowing the actual connections inside the lamp holder to become loose and turn dangerous. It might've just been stuck because it was old. What I found out when repairing my grandfather's lamp was that I couldn't take apart the actual lamp holder to open it. ![]() Maybe they just don't have the right tools or know the anatomy of a lamp base. They're really standard parts so I can't think of any reasons why in the linked Amazon review someone claims that it doesn't come apart. Here's how a threaded holder breaks down: That's one millimeter extra on each side, and no harp comes that close! Hue bulbs, I don't think that the Hues wouldn't fit into a fixture that uses a harp As info in the links earlier indicate, a Hue bulb is only 2mm wider at the widest part than a standard large bulb. If a lamp base is assembled (and tightened) by machines, I suppose in theory it might be possible that the holder can't be unscrewed without using tools for some extra force. On a quick glance, it just looks like they'd be an accessory you slip into the main rod before installing the actual lamp holder which can be smooth or threaded. The text "secured by bulb" is misleading because the bulb has nothing to do with it, it's secured by the shade ring around the threading of the lamp holder.Īnd yeah there's the harp but honestly I've never had a lamp with one of those, I'm not sure if they're even that common where I live. The easy one to fit for threaded holders is the Slip UNO fitter. Here's a good image portraying the two, but do not buy untested anonymous non-certified electronics from China, they are a fire hazard due to lack of quality control and certification: Threaded ones come with a shade fitting ring for the threads, so before screwing in the bulb, you slip a lamp shade into the holder, then fasten it with the fitting ring, and finally screw in the bulb. Smooth ones are meant for leaving the bulb bare, or for being used with clip-on shades. ![]() You can see that the holder's exterior is either smooth, or threaded. You should care about two types of lamp holders: threaded, and unthreaded. The parts on desk and floor lamps are the same, desk lamps just have a shorter base. ![]() I noticed that the switch had come somewhat loose and was a fire hazard, so I just changed the lamp holder part to a new one, being the first lamp like this that I've repaired. ![]() Well I actually just got my grandfather's old floor lamp which has an old fashioned shade, and a switch in the lamp holder. I have clip-on shades on my E14 Hue bulbs but that's fine because regardless of the size difference to standards, the bulb is still similarly bulbous, holding the clip in place. Basically the shape of the clip shouldn't be circular, but something that translates to the shape of the Hue bulb's top part. I suspect that it would tip, shift the point of gravity and result into the whole clip arrangement falling off with the weight of the lamp shade. Because the widest part of a Hue bulb is of a completely different shape, I can't imagine how that clip could get a solid grip from the bulb, allowing the lamp shade to stay safely upright. The problem isn't that it wouldn't fit through, but the fact that because the clip is circular, it's meant to get a steady grip from a bulb that's round and ball-like. Looks like the widest part is only 2mm wider on the Hue bulb. E26 describes the base, while A19 describes the shape and dimensions of the cap.Ĭompared to the dimensions of Philips E26 bulb (which doesn't have a shape code relatable to any of the common standards):

Also notice that when a new object is created it is automatically selected, and the command buttons in the Praat Objects window change accordingly. Note that it has the same name as your Sound object, which is an important convention within the world of Praat as all scripts assume that Sounds and TextGrids have identical names. Once you have named your tier(s) and left the point tier field blank, click OK to create the TextGrid object. Fun fact: I usually call mine t1 (an old habit back from when tier names could not begin with a number) and almost never use point tiers. They are merely placeholders that should be deleted immediately and replaced with whatever you want to call your tier(s). Mary, John and bell are not functions or keywords or special in any way. Oh the wonderful conversations I’ve had with students over the years trying to explain why Mary John bell are there! Remember that like its creators, Praat is a bit weird. While he wasn’t being treated like a faith healer in other parts of the world, Sorcar’s reputation eventually caught the attention of the BBC, which invited him to be featured on Panorama. By the time Sorcar convinced them to seek medical treatment, the boy had succumbed to the bite. Once, a family whose son had been bitten by a venomous snake brought him to Sorcar for healing instead of to a physician. Sorcar’s successful self-promotion made him a tremendous star in his native India, although he would sometimes regret how convincing his persona had become. (In a sign of the slightly sexist times, he also enjoyed “clipping” the tip of his assistant’s tongue off for the sin of talking too much.) He could make a car vanish from the stage and copy the handwriting of audience volunteers on a board even though he was blindfolded. Born in 1913 to multiple generations of magicians, Sorcar had embraced his heritage and used his unique ethnicity to travel the world. While Hussain was planting seeds for Indian illusionists on British television, Sorcar was occupied with appreciative Japanese audiences. In 1937, the BBC Television Service-which was then relatively new-broadcast a performance by magician Ahmed Hussain, who strolled across hot coals while clad in a turban and sherwani. From the earliest movies of the late 19 th century, cameras sought to capture tricks normally only available to theater crowds. It was also a time when television was continuing the fascination moving pictures had always had with illusionists. With international travel relatively uncommon in the UK, a visit from a foreign talent was bound to be noticed. ![]() The British, like much of the world, had become enamored with Indian stage performers who marketed themselves by playing up the stereotype of the Indian mystic-one who could summon peculiar abilities from a poorly understood corner of the world. Sorcar’s Apperformance on the BBC newsmagazine show Panorama-similar to the one seen in the video above-represented a pivotal time for a number of rising narratives in popular culture. Millions of BBC viewers were left to wonder whether Sorcar, an exotic-looking man clad in a turban, had just killed a woman on live television. Her body was in full view of the cameras, and the saw’s descent into her midsection-complete with a squealing motor, like it had met with resistance-was morbidly effective.Īs Sorcar’s saw seemed to be passing through Dey’s spine, host Richard Dimbleby stepped in front of the camera and abruptly announced that the show had come to an end. But in 1956, it was uncommon to see the trick performed on live television-and even more unusual that Dipty Dey, Sorcar’s assistant, hadn’t climbed into a box to help disguise the illusion. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sawing a woman in half is the great cliché of magic, a trick repeated tens of thousands of times over hundreds of years. Above her was a circular buzz saw, big enough to cut through animal carcasses. Sorcar grabbed the handle of the saw, turned it on, and began lowering it toward the girl's belly button. As the BBC’s cameras crept in for a closer look, Sorcar secured the young woman to the surface. Sorcar, led his 17-year-old hypnotized assistant to a flat surgical table.
